Technique:
This procedure is commonly used to treat fractures within the wrist to restore function to these essential bones and allow patients to once again perform everyday tasks. In the process of open reduction with internal fixation is extremely effective and normally indicated when there is complete separation and dislocation of a bone fragment.
What to Expect-Day of Surgery:
This is an inpatient surgery. The average stay in the hospital is 1-2 days. The procedure takes 1-2 hours depending on the complexity. Usually spinal or general anesthesia is used. Your anesthesiologist will discuss this with you prior to the surgery. In this procedure, Dr. Ahluwalia will operate on in order to set the bones in the precise place while screws, rods and/or plates are utilized to affix them beneath the skin and catalyze the healing process.
What to Expect-After Surgery:
You will wake up with a bulky dressing on your arm/wrist, and your arm will be numb. Later, on the day of surgery the Dr. Ahluwalia will check on the operated area and gently move the arm. Dr. Ahluwalia will give instructions on how to move the arm before the patient's hospital discharge and will also receive instructions for at-home recovery, including how to use the shoulder sling, change the bandage, and bath or shower. Dr. Ahluwalia will prescribe pain medication and schedule a follow-up appointment to discuss further physical therapy and restrictions
