Elbow Fracture Fixation

Technique:

This procedure will consists of an operation that fixes fractures in the humerus that are generally difficult to secure with a cast or splint (external fixation). The broken bones are fixed in place by various wires, nails or pins so as to ensure the best possible healing between them. This minimizes complications in which the bones either do not join correctly or start healing without forming a bond between the two.

What to Expect-Day of Surgery:

This is an inpatient surgery; the average stay in the hospital is 1-2 days. The procedure takes typically 2-3 hours, depending on the complexity. Usually general (or nerve block) anesthesia will be used.  Your anesthesiologist will discuss this with you prior to the surgery.

What to Expect-After Surgery:

You will wake up with a bulky dressing on your elbow with a sling, and your arm will be numb. Later on the day of surgery the Dr. Ahluwalia will check on the operated area, perhaps removing the sling and gently moving the arm. Dr. Ahluwalia will give instructions on how to move the arm before the patient's hospital discharge and will also receive instructions for at-home recovery, including how to use the shoulder sling, change the bandage, and bath or shower. Dr. Ahluwalia will prescribe pain medication and schedule a follow-up appointment to discuss further physical therapy and restrictions
