Patellofemoral Replacement

Technique:

In this procedure the surgery is performed by making a midline incision over the patella also known as the kneecap. The surgery involves removing a small thickness of the damaged bone from the front of the femur (thigh bone) and the back of the patella (kneecap). Patello Femoral replacement is performed for osteoarthritis affecting the back of the kneecap.

What to Expect-Day of Surgery:

This is an inpatient surgery and average stay is 2-3 days. The procedure takes about 1 hour. Usually general or (nerve block) anesthesia will be used. Your anesthesiologist will discuss this with you prior to surgery.

What to Expect-After Surgery:

After the surgery you will be taken to the recovery room and be given appropriate pain medication prescribed by Dr. Ahluwalia to make you comfortable. You will begin physical therapy right away and Dr. Ahluwalia will provide you with specific exercises to perform while still in the hospital and also when you go home. You will follow up with Dr. Ahluwalia in 10-14 days to after surgery, and at the visit further physical therapy activity and restrictions will be discussed.
