Shoulder Fracture Fixation
Technique:
The procedure for Fracture fixation surgery consists of specially-designed plates and pins that are inserted and put in place to fix
the broken collarbone or other nearby area that has suffered a break. Surgical fixation for a fracture promotes anatomic healing and allows
the bone to heal in its original position.
What to Expect-Day of Surgery:
This is an inpatient surgery; the average stay in the hospital is 1-2 days. The procedure takes typically 2-3 hours, depending on the complexity. Usually general (or nerve block) anesthesia will be used. Your anesthesiologist will discuss this with you prior to the surgery.
What to Expect-After Surgery:
You will wake up with a bulky dressing on your shoulder with a sling, and your arm will be numb. Later on the day of surgery the Dr. Ahluwalia will check on the operated shoulder, perhaps removing the sling and gently moving the arm. Dr. Ahluwalia will give instructions on how to move the arm before the patient's hospital discharge and will also receive instructions for at-home recovery, including how to use the shoulder sling, change the bandage, and bath or shower. Dr. Ahluwalia will prescribe pain medication and schedule a follow-up appointment to discuss further physical therapy and restrictions
